Heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium low heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and deeply browned.
Increase the heat to medium and add the ground beef. Season with salt, black pepper, and cumin. Break up the beef with a spoon and cook until the juices evaporate and the beef begins to brown.
Stir in the tomato purée and add a few splashes of water. Cover and cook for 5–7 minutes to let the flavours come together.
